One of My Own

Ok, so I've answered Sarah's meme. Now, here's a neat one that I found on Booking Through Thursday. I may put a couple of these up and see what kinds of answers I get back. To borrow Sarah's great commission - if you read it here, consider yourself tagged! Post your answers in comments or on your own blog and then post the link in comments.

Let's get Bookin! ::grin:: (Ok, that was lame.)

  1. What is most battered book in your collection? The one with loose pages, tattered corners, and page edges so soft that there's not even a risk of paper cuts anymore? Well, I have a couple of antique books dating from 1880 that are falling apart but they were that way when I got them so I don't think that counts. The most battered books in my collection are probably Through a Glass Darkly by Karleen Koen and The Seventh Scroll by Wilbur Smith.
  2. Why is this book so tattered? Is it that you love it so much that you've read it a zillion times? Is it a reference book you've used every day for the last seven years? Something your new puppy teethed on when you weren't looking? Both books are falling apart because I've read them a million times. They are two of my annual reads. Through a Glass Darkly is a complex story but it is one of my absolute favorites. I have had this paperback copy since I was in high school. Seventh Scroll is an incredible story about Egyptology - it is a great mystery and I just LOVE it. There is so much to it. What makes it so cool is that it references another of Smith's books, River God, as if it is the fictional backstory behind the modern day story in Seventh Scroll.
  3. What is the most pristine, perfect book in your collection? The one that looks like it's never been opened (and in fact may never have been)? Whose binding is uncracked, the corners still perfect? Since I am a total bibliophile, I try to take really good care of my books. My hardbound books are almost all in perfect condition, even though they have all been read over and over (in order to find a place in my library, it has to be a beloved book). My paperback books are a little different - you can tell that some of them have been dropped in the tub! I have several books that I bought at some point but haven't had time to read yet. I like to buy from the bargain bin and then read them when I get a chance.
  4. Why is that book so perfect? Was it a gift? Is it a coffee table book too beautiful to use? Something you simply have no interest in and haven't bothered to open? see answers to question 3

I just LOVE books!!

It's Showtime...Almost

Well, the show opens on Friday. Last night, I began to think this thing might go off without too many hitches. It's that point that every person in theatre arrives at (hopefully), usually just before the curtain opens.

Don't get me wrong; the production staff is doing a stellar job pulling things together and the show is going to look spectacular. This is a huge show with many, many parts and, as in any show, we always wonder if we will be able to pull it all off.

But, the Fates have smiled on our little venture and we will open on Friday with a show that will knock their socks off.

I have new pictures to post, but Blogger is having a "moment." I'll try again later.

I think tonight I am going to sit out in the house when I am not on stage and take more pictures. That, or I'm going to call my friend from the paper and ask him to come and shoot us tonight; just for "fun." Personally, I hope he says yes because I still struggle with shots in the dark. Maybe I'll have time to take a photography class one day. ::guffaw:: Sure. .

SOOOOOOOOO Ready for Vacation

I promised to put up pictures from rehearsal. I haven't taken very many, I'm sorry to say. Here are a couple of them, though. I'll try and take more this weekend.

"small house of uncle thomas...written by a woman harriet beechah stow-ah" Some of the wives learn part of the ballet.

Here, several of the wives "initiate" a MALE cast-member (playing Lun Tha) into the harem. ::giggle::

This was our first try with the black hair. You can see the red if you get close but, from stage, it looks pretty convincing. Not bad, for my first attempt.

Know what? The critter will be home in LESS than three days! In fact, tomorrow, I can say, "she'll be home day after tomorrow."

I am so ready for my vacation to start. I'm going to play with Munchkin and nap with Munchkin and snuggle with Munchkin... I have a busy time planned for us, can't you tell?

I'm so sleepy. Folks, I'm going to melt if I try and sit in this chair any longer. I'm going to scrounge something to eat before bed and then go to SLEEP!

2 MORE DAYS!!! (well, almost)

She's Alive!

Yes, I really am still around. You know the down side of having too much to do? You have TOO MUCH TO DO! ::grin::

The musical is picking up speed. I had my costume fitting this week and the costumes are going to be magnificent. I'm wearing purple - a color I wouldn't be caught dead in normally because orange hair and purple do NOT go together unless you want to look like a clown. But, I am going to have black hair so it's my one chance.

Munchkin will be home in 12 days. I cannot wait. I wish I could go get her. I think she's had about all the fun she can stand. They've gone to the beach and fishing and the zoo and the aquarium and the drive-thru animal preserve (I have a really funny picture of a giraffe sticking its head in the window) and a strawberry farm and...well, you get the picture. She's been busy.

But all fun has to eventually come to an end and I think she's ready to come home. K and I are re-decorating the Munchkin's bedroom this coming up weekend. We are doing a flower border around the bottom trim and maybe some butterflies on the walls. I have these really neat animal puppets that I want to mount to her walls and some little shelves and I want to get her some little hooks to hang her costumes and things on and I got her a little mirror for her wall. It is going to look great. I'll post a picture when I get it finished.

Today was the best 4th of July I can remember. K and I went down to the parade and walked about 544 miles up and down Main Street and Central. It was great fun.

The Marching 100 heads down Main Street - Mom says they are ready for the fast entrance again. I told her good luck convincing the band directors of that..

Mom was a parade float judge this year. She was having TOO much fun on the bandstand.

This is great - a true Central Texas tradition - Dr. Long attaches little red wagons to his mower and drives in the parade; one for every grand and now great-grandkid. He's been doing it for 32 years. They said his "wagon train" was over 100 feet long now!!

The local Shriners always race their go-carts in the parade. They drive in these crazy figure-eights, squealing their tires; much to the delight of the crowd.

The Relay for Life float won this year. It is a great float - this picture doesn't do it justice.

After the parade we ate lunch and then came back to the house to cool off. Later, we went to Confederate Park and watched them hand out the awards from the parade and then over to Yettie Polk Park and looked at crafts and heard a couple of kids in the Fiddler's contest.

Then, tonight, K & I went for dinner over at a new friend's house and then over to the Center to watch the fireworks in Miller Park. We ended the day with Starbucks.

Truly a fantastic day.

It doesn't seem possible that it is really only Tuesday and I have to get up and go to work tomorrow and rehearsal tomorrow night. That being the case, I'd better sign off and crawl into bed.

Happy Birthday, America.
